How to decorate your home with plants even when natural light is limited: Alina Isakova, an interior greenery specialist, shares her advice on adding plants even to the darkest corners 🌿

In Serbia, where many buildings are low-rise and windows often face courtyards, rooms can often be quite dim. Still, everyone wants to fill their space with living plants and create a cozy green corner that feels welcoming and homely. We spoke with Alina Isakova, an expert in interior plant design and care, who explained how to choose plants for low-light rooms and how to care for them so they stay healthy and vibrant.

Plants that thrive in dark corners of the home:

  • Aspidistra: thrives with minimal light and stays rich green
  • Sansevieria: tolerates partial shade and requires very little maintenance
  • Zamioculcas: easily adapts to low light; water only once every 3–4 weeks
  • Epipremnum: one of the easiest trailing plants, performs well even with minimal sunlight
  • Aglaonema: for darker apartments, opt for classic green varieties that retain their decorative appeal even in low light

Key tips for caring for shade-tolerant plants:

🌱 Choose plants with deep green foliage. The richer the leaf color, the more efficient photosynthesis will be in low light.

🌱 Adjust watering according to light levels. The less light a plant receives, the less water it needs. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

🌱 Keep in mind that no plant thrives in complete darkness. Even the most shade-tolerant species need at least a small source of light for photosynthesis.

🌱 Consider using grow lights. Modern LED grow lamps fit standard sockets easily and provide light that mimics natural sunlight while being gentle on the eyes.

Even in the dimmest apartment, it is possible to create a cozy, green corner. The key is to choose plants according to the available light and follow simple care rules.
